Will insurance pay for an appointment with a Registered Dietitian?

Most group plans and many individual insurance policies cover nutrition consults for disease management and certain preventative care.  Coverage varies, and the client is responsible for contacting their insurance provider to determine eligibility and coverage.  You may require a referral from your doctor or pre-approval from your insurance provider prior to the nutrition consult. Currently, Kelly is an in-network provider with Aetna and Anthem BS/BS, and processes these claims.  For other insurance providers, the client is responsible for payment at the time of service, and a copy of the bill is provided which can be submitted for reimbursement.

What's the difference between a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist?

In order to become a Registered Dietitian, the individual must receive a 4-year degree or advanced degree from a program recognized by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, complete an internship of 900+ hours, and pass the National Registered Dietitian Exam.  The title of “Registered Dietitian” is protected by law, and many states require certification to practice.  Anyone can call themselves a “nutritionist”, no matter what form of education or experience they may have.  For help finding a Registered Dietitian in your area, visit the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics at www.EatRight.org.
